Time: June 10, 2006 Saturday
Location:
Bear Mountain State Park, NY
To gather:
at the BBQ area by the Hassian Lake and behind the Bear Mountain Inn at 10:00 AM
Activities:
If you are interested in flexing your muscles and taking photos from the high and above, hiking is what we recommend. We will start around 10:30 AM and come back in time around 2:00 PM for the picnic.
Hiking
: FEATURES : This loop hike climbs Bear Mountain on the Major Welch Trail and descends on the Appalachian Trail, passing a number of panoramic viewpoints. LENGTH: 4.0 miles. DIFFICULTY: Strenuous. TIME: About three hours. http://www.nynjtc.org/trails/record/20031201.html
For those taking a laid-back approach, you can listen in the presentation of College Admission, take a nice walk around the lake, or drive up to Perkins Memorial Tower/Iona Island. Swimming is available too.
Swimming: cool off while enjoying the great view at Bear Mountain's large outdoor swimming pool. The pool is open Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. beginning Memorial Day weekend.
Picnic
: Picnic areas and playgrounds are scattered throughout the park. And various festivals and craft shows are held throughout the year. The zoo lets visitors get a glimpse of many of the animals indigenous to the area, such as the bald eagle, fox, black bear, river otter, owl, hawk, deer, bobcat, turkey and various types of fish. Trailside museums highlight the area's history -- especially its importance in the Revolutionary War -- local geology and nature, including mounted insects and bird species as well as live fish, reptiles and amphibians.
Sightseeing
: Drive up to Perkins Memorial Tower and Iona Island. The winding road up to the tower leads to a view of the Hudson Valley and beyond. Pinpoint spots like High Tor Mountain, Anthony's Nose Mountain, the Bull Hill Fire Tower, the U.S. Miliary Academy at West point and New York City. Inside the tower are early 1900 black-and-white pictures imprinted on tile, depicting scenes such as guests at Bear Mountain, the construction of the inn and a ferryboat which used to transport visitors to the site from New York City. A few miles from the tower is Iona Island and a peaceful way to end the day. The island getaway allows for a relaxing view and sound of rushing waves. It's a good place to watch the sun disappear below the horizon.
Unfortunately, paddle boats as well as rowboats are not available to rent until June 21 at Hessian Lake.
Admission:
Parking is $6. Admission to the pool is $2 for adults, $1 for children 6-12. Cost for the zoo and trailside museums is $1 for ages 13 and over, while children 6-12 are 50 cents.
DIRECTIONS TO BEAR MOUNTAIN (DRIVING):
From the Palisades Parkway:
Take Palisades Pkwy North to the end (go past exit 19 labeled "Bear Mountain"), then take first right off the circle (9W South). The Overlook Lodge and Cliff House are the 1st immediate right once you leave the circle (Hessian Drive).
From Northern Connecticut:
Take I-84 West to the Beacon Bridge, take Newburgh exit, follow 9W South about 30 minutes to the traffic circle that intersects with 202 and the Palisades Parkway. Take the 9W South exit (2nd exit) off that circle. The Overlook Lodge and Cliff House are the first immediate right once you leave the circle (Hessian Drive).
From Southern Connecticut:
Take I-95 South to 287 West, then over Tappan Zee Bridge to exit 13N (Palisades Pkwy North). Follow above directions "From the Palisades Parkway."
From Newark International Airport:
Two options: (#1) Take I-78 East to the NJ Turnpike North (I-95, toll road). Get off the NJ Turnpike/I-95 North at exit 72, and follow signs for Palisades Parkway North. (You will turn left at the light at the end of the exit ramp, go straight through a few more traffic lights and the entrance ramp to the Palisades Parkway will be on your right, marked by brown-and-white "Palisades Parkway" signs that are a little hard to read. In any case, do not miss exit 72 or you will go over the George Washington Bridge into New York City!) From there, follow above directions "From the Palisades Parkway." Or (#2), take I-78 West to the Garden State Parkway North (toll road), and take the Garden State Parkway to the last exit (I-87/I-287). Bear right for I-87 east/south toward Tappan Zee Bridge. Take I-87 to exit 13N (Palisades Parkway North). Follow above directions "From the Palisades Parkway."
From New Jersey or Pennsylvania, or points south:
Take the NJ Turnpike (I-95, toll road) North to the Garden State Parkway North (toll road) to the last exit (I-87/287, New York State Thruway). Bear right for I-87 east/south toward Tappan Zee Bridge. Take I-87 to exit 13N (Palisades Parkway North). Follow above directions "From the Palisades Parkway."
From New York City:
Take the George Washington Bridge to the Palisades Parkway North. Follow above directions "From the Palisades Parkway."
From Boston:
Take the Mass Pike (Route 90) West to Sturbridge Exit, then take Route 84 West. Follow directions "From Northern Connecticut."
Public Transportation:
Rail commuters can take Metro-North <http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/mnr/html/planning/schedules/sched_form.cfm>to the Peekskill or Garrison stations and take a taxi across the river to the park.
